RE: STEREO UPGRADE...BASS PORTS
There are a host of variables you'll need to consider. Without knowing more
about the speakers your using, I can't comment precisely, but in general -
porting is a fairly difficult thing to judge. Different subwoofers demand
different "enclosures". Some are designed to be "free-air" meaning your
trunk cavity IS the enclosure. Some are designed to be in a sealed box with
specific dimensions. Some are designed to be in a ported box, but again,
with specific dimensions, and specific ports. "Port tuning" is a bit of a
science, and most experts will tell you that it more experimentation and art
than science. In short, I wouldn't recommend cutting ports in your trunk
deck lid to "relieve pressure" unless you have solid reason to believe that
the speakers demand it.
Dynamat is good sound proofing material, but again, without a rationale for
use, it will do little more than cut down on road/engine noise if placed in
appropriate locales. Some folks use it for acoustic purposes, but probably
more experimentation involved.
There are a multitude of stereo upgrade options. I've personally built
systems with Infinity Competition Series speakers, Alpine and Precision
Power amps, MB Quarts, JL Audio, you name it. Bottom line - there are great
sounding options to fit nearly any budget, and a host of add-on options that
don't require cutting, chopping and devaluing your car - research is the
key.

Subject: STEREO UPGRADE...BASS PORTS
Hey Guys (as well as Gals),
Has anyone made upgrades in their stereo systems; if so ever consider bass
ports to relieve the tension in the trunk (i.e. port from trunk to inside of
vehicle)? I am considering this but would like expert Audi opinions. Does
anyone know where I can make the port? How big should it be? Should I make
multiple ports? I have a 1991 Audi 100; any information will be greatly
appreciated. So far I have considered the "Ski bag" and the "earphone
thingamagig" in the rear of my car as possible places for ports without
devaluing my car. Any comments? I am also considering using dynamat in the
trunk...Has anyone ever used this stuff? Where is the best spots to put it?
Thanks,
N.P.
