RE: 2 different 12v V6's? [Was: V6 Oil Filter numbers]
Actually there are at least three different 12v V6 engine used by Audi in
the US anyway.
The following is based on my interpretation of the Audi service manuals and
may not reflect reality.
AAH was used in 90/Cab/100/A6 models from 1992 model year through the first
half of 1995 model year.
Some modifications to the valve train in production at about 8/94.
Lubrication system changes introduced in production about 8/94.
AFC was used in 90/Cab/A6/A4 models from the second half of 1995 model year
through 1997model year.
The Cabriolet may have used it through 1998, Cabriolet manual show
only AAH and AFC.
The A4 only had AFC through 1996 model year.
The AFC got the changes to the lubrication system that includes the
new oil filter. (there is a TSB on it)
ACK was used in the 1997 model year A4.
No changes from the AFC engine are indicated in the manual.
AHA 2.8L V6 5 valve engine was used in A6/A4 starting in 1998.

Subject: 2 different 12v V6's? [Was: V6 Oil Filter numbers]
I have to admit ignorance on this topic. I did not know that there
were 2
different 12valve V6's out there; the AAH and the AFC. I've got an
early
build AAH, and all of its inherent problems. Luckily, I'm a low
mileage
driver and so I'm not necessarily seeing EVERYTHING that could go
wrong
with my engine.
My question is, what are the main differences between the AAH and
the AFC
engines? Elliott Potter has mentioned that the AFC engine received
an
oiling system with a higher flow rate to ensure that the top end is
swimming in oil. Apparently, that is not the case in the AAH engine
and,
frankly, that worries me. A lot.
I wonder what other changes were made to the 12valve V6, and why? I
highly
doubt that any answers would be forthcoming from AoA, nor from the
FatherLand... seems to be their SOP, and probably an admission that
SOMETHING was wrong. You should see/hear the denials that anything
was ever
wrong with the early V6 head gasket, and they'd like you to believe
that
the head gasket design change in '93 was simply a cosmetic thing.
Don't get
me started on that... f'n $1600!
So, who knows? Anyone?

Body:
To all,
The long filter appeared with the switch to AFC engine in mid 1995.
In the filter catalogs, confusion reigns supreme on the AFC filter.
BoschUSA #72199 is 142mm high, no anti drain and a bypass setting of
11-17psi. Mann's W719/25 is 132mm high, anti drain and bypass set
to
27-35psi. Don't know what Mahle's OC154 is (no catalog). For the
filters database, I am trying to find out from AoA what are the
correct
specs for the AFC motor, but no joy so far (no surprise there).
