RE: Do it yourself garages

Here's what I sent to Chris. I thought about it some more, and figured I
should CC: the q-list (and the Syncro List) as well.

I'm not currently subbed to the q-list, so please CC: me on any
commentary/responses.

Thanks.

Subject: Garage Days

Chris,

This is a great idea. Not only do we get to get together and "talk Audi",
but we learn something practical in the process!! And like you said... save
money too!!

Now that I'm up in New England, I'm game to try to get together once in a
while. Count me in as a willing participant for some events.

I too could host a "garage day" at my place. The house I just bought has a
huge garage (i.e. I can fit three cars in for the winter.... albeit a couple
at an angle... and still have oodles of room for a couple of motorcycles...
or snowmobiles... and the snowblower and lawnmower...). It used to be a body
shop on a vacant (i.e. no house) piece of land. The guy decided to build a
house on the site... and voila... a dream house/garage for an auto
enthusiast!! I just happened to be in the right place at the right time...
:-)

In addition to lots of sockets, wrenches, ramps, jacks, etc... I have an air
compressor and air tools (a cheap set, but they work...), so that might help
also... depending on what we are trying to do. I'm always game to learn
something new... and have fun at the same time.

BTW, FWIW, I live in Auburn, MA... right next to Worcester.

Take care. Let me know if this idea takes off.... or if anyone in the New
England area wants to get together sometime soon.

Some of the New England area quattro list members occasionally get together
for "cocktails" at brew pubs north and west of Boston; hasn't happened in
quite a while. We kicked around the idea of "tech days" at various people's
houses; winter caught up with us and put the idea on hold. I'm planning a
"timing belt day" this spring, once things warm up a bit. I think this kind
of idea has merit; perhaps in conjunction with the localchapters of the
quattro club? A lot of my experience/advice has been gained vicariously
through the posts by others... but I can turn a wrench. My toolcollection
isn't extensive, but I've got a couple sets of ramps, a floor jack,4
jackstands, 1/4 and 1/2 inch sockets, wrenches, lights, mityvac,
digitalmultimeter, parts fiche(s), Bentley's for the 4000/coupe, 100/200,
and late70's 5000; etc., a two-car garage, and a big flat driveway. Biggest
thing Idon't have is a lift, but the garage ceiling is too low, anyways.
I've got one or two others interested in the timing belt change day;
anyoneelse interested? I'm in southern NH, just up 93 from the
Massachusetts border. Date to be determined; if we get a bunch of
interested people, we can spread it out over a couple weekends
and places (which would certainly appease my wife). Seems like we could
each save several hundred in labor, and learn abit about our cars in the
process.
