ur-quattro differences (continued)
after the recent debate about the effects of upsizing wheels and tyres on
an ur-quattro, there was some debate about the chassis changes between the
wr, mb and rr-series ur-quattro chassis.
i've done some digging about this issue and come up with the following. my
main sources are the autocar road tests which contain full dimensional
information, cross-checked with my owners manual (for the rr)
anyway, suffice to say that there were dimensional changes between the
early wr (series 1) and the last wr (series 2) cars. to recap, the early
cars had the 205/60 15 tyres on 6x15 et45 wheels, the series 2 cars had
8x15 wheels with an et24 offset. as stated in my previous emails, there
were a number of changes to the suspension by way of new wishbones, ball
joints and the deletion of the rear anti-roll bar between the series 1 and
2 models. the major differences of course were the changes in wheels from
the 6x15" to the 8x15 with 215/50 15 tyres. there were no changes to the
caster, camber and toe between the models.
below is detailed the dimensional differences between the models (in mm),
series 1 wr 1st and series 2-4 wr, mb and rr last.
wheel base 2524 2524
front track 1421 1461 (+40mm)
rear track 1458 1494 (+36mm)
ground cl 165 153 (-12mm)
length 4404 4404
width 1723 1723
weight 1291kg 1395kg
in summary therefore, it is clear that there was a change in track which
occurred with the wishbone/balljoint replacement which occurred at the end
of the '82 model year for the '83 year. this was at the end of
85-c-902-000, and the start of 85-d-900-001. in summary at the front, the
changes involved new lower wishbone, ball joint, and new shock absorbers
and anti-roll bar (along with their rubber mountings). there was a change
in front springs at 85-e-900-324 (nov '83, during the '84 model year). at
the rear the anti-roll bar was deleted and a new wishbones specified, tie
rod, and the ball joints. the rear strut also changed for the '83 model
year, along with the rear shocks changed and the coil springs.
if i've worked it out correctly, the hub-to-hub measurement of the series 1
front is (1421-45-45) 1331mm while for the series 2 it is (1461-24-24)
1413mm. that's a change of 82mm. at the rear it works out to 1368 (series
1) and 1446mm (series 2), for a difference of 78mm.
