Well, truth be told, it's pretty difficult to get an accurate measurement so
long as you're measuring from the rims since they're rarely ever straight ...
if you can't get underneath the tires to measure through the hub centers (the
local SCCA tech guys use a trammel bar setup that you drive onto to perform
this), then you'll need to do exactly what you propose.
One of the problems with trying to write a brief response to a post is that
it's sometimes necessary to leave out certain information. Needless to say,
for some people, the omitted information is critical to understanding what
you're trying to say while for others, it's redundant and woul distract from
your message if it was included. As a former editor, I'm used to making these
kinds of decisions but the reality is that I seem to get it wrong as often as
I get it right ... oh, well.
