Sounds suspicious, banks don't physically hold the title,
there is usually a notation on the title that there are liens
against the vehicle when there is a loan involved. (on an '88?)
I don't know what State you live in, but you haven't bought
anything until you have the title in your hands. If, like
most states, there is an odometer statement on the back of
the title, and the seller fills out the odometer statement
and checks off the "not actual mileage/mechanical mileage
differs from odo mileage" box (states word it differently)
you have no recourse at all. Hopefully it was just an honest
mistake. Had a friend buy a car last year, seller was going
to send him the title later, gave him a very purdy notorized
receipt, there was only one small problem, the seller didn't
own the car...and neither did my friend after the police towed
it away.
