The only state I am familiar with is California ... but here if you use the
car as collateral for the loan the bank gets the pink slip.  You are shown
as registered owner on the registration, and the lender as lienholder ...
but you don't get the pink slip until after you have paid the note ... other
states obviously are different ...

Yes, that is the way it works here in California as well ... you would only
have recourse here if the owner claimed the mileage to be actual on the
title transfer and you could prove that it was wrong.  

I thought that Audi (actually VDO) had gotten the broken odo issue fixed by
1988 ... both my '85 and '88 cars have odos that seem to work fine (knock on
Zebrano) ... but perhaps that was not true of the 80 ...
