I thought that Audi (actually VDO) had gotten the broken odo issue fixed by
1988 ... both my '85 and '88 cars have odos that seem to work fine (knock on
Zebrano) ... but perhaps that was not true of the 80 ...

The one in my 1988 90q recently broke at about 175 kmi.  Got a replacement
from Chris (Autobahn01@aol.com).  Old one resists disassembly at the needle.
I am overdue in sending it to VDO for an estimate.
