I know for certain that the manual rack 4ks ('80 and '81, I think) came with
steering dampers and I seem to recall that my '81 4k with a power rack also
had one ... I'm not positive, though.  I suspect that you can find one in a
salvage yard if you look around enough ... I saved the manual rack and damper
from my other old '81 4k and will probably install the damper on my Ur-Q as an
experiment once I get it back on the road.  Using the manual rack is tempting
due the potential weight savings from dumping the PS pump, hoses and reservoir
-- Yes, I know this also means no assist for the brakes but I've got that
handled -- but at just under five turns lock-to-lock, it's way too slow ... it
always did have a nice feel to it, though.

You might also check out VW Dashers, Quantums and Foxes since they used the
same style rack ... I got the one for my 200q off my girlfriend's '89 Fox
wagon before we junked it.  I doubt they'll cost much since I'd be surprised
if anyone working behind the counter has any idea what it is...
