Speaking of oval pistons...  In 1990 VW had a diesel 4-cylinder engine that
used *extremely* oval pistons.  This engine is based on the standard 1.6L
diesel 4 at the time, but had a widened block and head.  It increased the
displacement from 1.6L to 2.3L without an increasing the length of the
block.  The horsepower (normally aspirated) went from 60PS in the 1.6 version
to 78PS, and torque from 110Nm to 165Nm.

I don't know if this engine was ever produced in volume.  Manufacturing such
a thing would be quite a challenge, I imagine.
