On-the-Car Bearing Replacement anyone?

First, let me properly introduce myself. I'm Dave Chmilar (pronounced
Schmiller - not German BTW) a long-time AUDI enthusiast. I've
experienced (and worked on) the '72 100GL 2door, '73-76 100LS's,
'82-5K, '84-5KS, and currently my 86-5KcdTQ has 225K km (140K mi) on
it and I expect many more as it shows no signs of the dreaded car
cancer (rust) which claims so many vehicles here in Calgary, Canada.
As AUDI prices drop, the value goes up exponentially and I'm sure
looking forward to the current models, in about 10-12 years that is.
Keep them in good shape for me...

I predict that I will be replacing a rear wheel bearing on my 86-5KTQ
soon, and I'm going to try it on-the-car with a homemade tool. A
drawing of the tool I propose to use can be seen at
http://www.telusvelocity.net/~dave/bearing1.gif
Still have to pull the driveshaft/brake caliper. Also seems like a
good time to replace the diff seal, as they are weeping.

My engineering is not complete, critique it and give me your
suggestions and/or advice.

I have done it off-the-car on the a front strut, but the rear looks
harder to remove w/o wrecking something. No press is required, just
intelligent hammer blows.

I called around to the local parts emporiums and found prices range
from Cdn$45-in stock (A&H Mueller in Calgary) to $135 for the bearing.
Front and rear are identical, which no doubt keeps the price down,
thanks A/G!
[Audi Gods].

Love to chat more, but my 3 year old daughter Suzanne is whining, and
Sarah (3mos) is waking up, so Auf Wiedersehen for now...
