Broken up cat

Howdy Audi fans,

    Someone told me they thought my catalytic converter was broken up.  I
tried to replace it, but could not get it off.  Is there a way I can tell
for sure if it is bad before paying $200 to have it professionally
installed.  No one will install my spare part becaus of federal law.
