Subject: Rear view mirror controller
Steven, I've got one--in fact I have two.
The outside mirrors didn't work when I got my car. I checked on the obvious
and the local good quattro shop, Arctic Import Repair tried a new switch
then diagnosed the problem as the Mirror Memory Module (4A0907445A). I
ordered up a new one from Carlson ($189) and it was going to be replaced the
next time the car needed to be in the shop.
So I get a call late in the afternoon..."well, we've looked everywhere and
we can't find where the new module goes." They called everywhere, Audi, the
local dealer, friends all over. Many knowledgeable sources insisted it was
under the rear seat. A week or so later a couple of V8 manuals I'd bought
off of the list arrived and in the '92 model changes there was a diagram of
where the module was--on top of a heater duct in front of the passenger
seat. I called the shop only to find that they'd gotten the same
information from another source an hour or two earlier.
Turns out that a water leak from the plastic shield forward of the
windshield had run water over the module and it was green with moss or
something. The new one works fine and does, in fact, aims the right mirror
down in reverse (but only when the right adjusting button is down).
If you have any interest in playing with one of these I'll gladly send you
the old one. I wouldn't be surprised if it worked after being cleaned up.

Subject: Rear view mirror controller
I was looking through the V8 service manual and fiche and noticed that the
'92-on V8s had the memory rear view mirror function. I assume this was
connected to the memory seats. Does anyone happen to have a car with the
memory mirrors? If so, do you know if it aims the mirrors down when the car
is put into reverse as well? I figure this module is on the newer V8s and
the A8 as well, are there any other models that have this as well?
TIA!
