Unintended Acceleration from Dateline recently
Hi all,
Couldn't resist throwing in my 2 pence. I was a victim of the Audi
accusations in the 80's; whatever value my 5KT had dropped like a rock.
But that didn't bother me, for I didn't feel the need to dispose of it.
What irked me was reading an article in a magazine, maybe Fortune, Forbes,
Barron's, or ??, that pointed out that the NHTSA had piles of files on
unintended acceleration claims, on _ALL_ makes of vehicles. Most were of
the "I meant to push the brake, and..." variety.
However, what really burned me was that Audi (1) had created a climate
where they became a singular lightning rod, and (2) as pointed out, they
handled the attack ineptly by inviting them and then caving when they came.
The result of the class action lawsuit was a joke. I got several letters,
and apparently the most important one contained nothing, zilch, literally.
There was the offer to get a discount on a new car, but it was of no
interest to me, for I felt I could get a better deal simply through
negotiation.
To see another car maker being torched is no surprise.
Cheers!
