passat vs. a4

Of interest from this month's "Car & Driver" long term test of a VW 
Passat stripper:

With an aftermarket chip installed, it became a real smoker.  Thus, 
being a platic-wheel-cover stripper model, a venerable Q-ship that can 
match a 328i's 0-60 (or there'bouts).  So for those of you who want the 
a4 but can't muster the cash...

(it was $21,150 well equipped, and the chip was around $500 I think)
