I heard it too, and I repeat the rumor on my web site.  I plan to do it
with next timing belt change.  Gonna replace the valve stem seals and a
few other things as well so I'll have no idea how much it helps really!  

Ned Ritchie confirmed that this is a good poor man's upgrade.

What matters is to use a solid lifter shaft for a solid lifter head, or
hydraulic shaft on hydraulic lifter head.
