RE: Door lock 1991 100Q

Door lock mechanism on driver's side on my 100 Quattro has stopped
working/locking. Insertion and turning of the key activates the alarm, but
that's it.

If you can solve it with Pat's solution, you're lucky. More likely it is the
aluminum rod connecting the cylinder with the lock mechanism that has broke.
It used to be extruded alloy, Audi later upgraded it to stamped steel. If it
is only the plastic clip, I'll still check if you have the aluminum rod or a
steel (=previously replaced) rod/lever. If you have an aluminum, I'd change
it to a steel once you have the door apart anyway.
In order to fix that one, you need some slink fingers. The following is from
memory (I did it about 18 months ago).
Go to Audi and buy the parts: Lock cylinder, lock washer and steel rod (saw
my invoice last night, about $25). Remove the door panel. Note how the links
are connecting the door handle and door lock mechanism. Make sketch/take
picture for memory. Remove exterior door handle and lock cylinder (a bit
tricky and tight). Note how the alarm switch is integrated into the cylinder
housing and how the switch is lined up. Remove clip on the back of the
cylinder and, with key in cylinder, pull it out VERY _gently_ out of its
housing. All tumblers and springs now need to be moved from this cylinder to
your new one. Be very careful here, else, key will not turn cylinder. Grease
everything in good graphite grease and make sure it works. Reinstall
cylinder into cylinder housing. Mount handle back in car, etc, etc.
E-mail me directly if you need more help.
