Coil woes and questions
Same trouble with the 854kq...this time some general questions...pulled
the coil out of the car and brought it home...resistance from 1 to 4, on
the three month old Bosch coil, is right at 3000 ohms...good per the
book....however, the resistance from 1 to 15 at first settled at about
.7 ohms, and the book says max is .75. Now it is settled at .8, and
sometimes fluctuates to .9---I know from basic physics etc, that as a
resistor, or metal, heats up, the resistance also increases...does
anyone know if starting at .8 or .9 and then heating up will cause the
engine to shut down after about 3 minutes? It will start fine about
once an hour, run for a few minutes well, and then shut off...I check
the coil wire and no spark (also, how strong is the spark from the coil
to a grounded point in these cars?). So I am thinking coil. The Hall
sender is new, as is the ignition control unit. The ecu is one of two I
have, and neither solves the problem. I get a good fluctuating voltage
from the hall sender, and my mechanic chased wiring on the car from stem
to stern for this same problem a couple of months ago...it came out with
a clean bill of heath. The car has a new head, and all injection
components and sensors check out ok. I also put in a new relay panel,
and that did nothing to solve the problem. I also changed connectors on
the leads to 1 and 15 on the coil, and the car has new plug wires...all
to no avail!!!
So if anyone out there has a good grounding (no pun intended) in coil
operation in these cars, and can tell me the effect of a bit of extra
resistance in the coil, please drop a line!
