It seems that a few of the '86 model cars were shipped with the air cooled
turbos, the one I saw was an automatic car. If they could do it on one, they
could do it on another. Audi used the air-cooled turbos through some time in
1986, which was the changeover year.
<< I know the earlier Audi 5000 turbo cars, pre-1984 had oil cooled turbos
which could be problematic>>
According to Ned Ritchie, the Audi engineers are touchy about this subject.
He said they emphatically told him that ALL their turbos were oil lubricated,
some were air-cooled and the later ones were water cooled. As noted above, the
changeover year was 1986, which means the possibility of having either one
during that year. Most of the '86s I have seen were water-cooled, as were all
of the later years. All of the '85s I have seen were air-cooled, as were all
of the older years.
The air-cooled turbos could be short lived if they were treated poorly.
Infrequent oil changes, shutting the engine off quickly after a lengthy drive
"at speed", etc.
The water-cooled versions seem to last forever if treated properly. Our K-26
had 245,000 miles on it whan I replaced it with a K-24. The oil lines showed
very little sign of any coking, the turbo gave no indication of problems. FWIW
it has been on synthetic oil since somewhere before 100K miles, which may have
helped keep it clean in there. And cleanliness in the oil is the lifeblood of
the engine, and especially the turbo.
Later.
