Take note that in Europe the production of the newer model (with updated
interior and flush doorhandles) started on 1/88. It is possible that
initially Audi was going to introduce this upgraded model to the US market
in 88 under the name "5000", hence the brochure mentioned by Ti, but
changed their mind and the updated cars were not introduced until 89. It is
possible that a number of late-88 cars were sold as 89 models.
