I don't think that's true
The following post from the archives, by Arryn M. tells which BOGE TG strut
works.
And another post from Steve B. dated June 2, 1998 says this same BOGE strut
worked on the rear of his 5ktq.

Well, after much hassle, I got the replacement Turbo Gas shocks for the
rear, and there was no modification necessary, although they are not listed
as the correct part.  Boge part 32-859F is what bolts on, but they're
supposed to bolt on to a non-Quattro wagon.  They're an exact match for
what I pulled off so...
