exhaust flange replacement

Anyone have a good method for replacing the front exhaust flange
that connects the exhaust to the cat on a 5KTQ.

I don't understand it.  The exhaust is made of s/s, but the flange 
(that doesn't come off because the exhaust is one piece) is made 
out of iron oxide.  

In the past tried the 3 piece flanges without a lot of luck.

I'm sure that everyone with a 5KTQ has gone thru this.
