"Audi has given the clearest indication yet that its British Le Mans team
could run a closed GT car in this year's race. Audi Sport UK boss John
Wickham has finally confirmed speculation that the German marque is working
on a GT1-P car to race alongside its open-top R8 sports racer.

'There may be a car ready to run in 1999. It's part of Audi's plan to look
at that,' he said. Asked if Audi Sport UK would run two of the cars at Le
Mans in June, Wickham said, 'I'm not able to say. There are investigations
going on all over the place. We should know what car we will run in two
weeks.'

Audi is facing a race against time to complete its GT1-P car at its new
manufacturing base in Norfolk. Audi Sport UK cannot swap between the GT1-P
and LMP sports racing classes after March 3 except in cases of 'force
majeure'.
