That's a tough call John. Considering I've only driven the Jetta, I can't
honestly say.

I think you might be underestimating John Q. Public's willingness to embrace
a Turbo over a normally aspirated car, and overestimating the appeal of the
Passat. Granted, it's a very nice looking, clean mid-sized sedan, but size
does matter. Psychological variables can be extremely powerful buying
influences. Americans have really embraced compact cars over the years. It
hasn't been until just recently that the Camry, Accord, and other top
selling models have redesigned their cars to occupy the mid-sized sedan
segment. Many Americans have grown accustomed to small, nimble, easily
maneuverable cars that provide a solid 'safe' feel. I think the Jetta fits
that niche and will continue to do so. The Jetta's target market, young
professionals, are putting off families until much later in life, but their
not putting off the practicality of 4-door sedans - Jetta fits this niche
just fine. As for performance, John Q. Public hears 'Turbo' and thinks
'expensive to repair, unreliable, temperamental sports car transplant that
requires special care, consideration and maintenance' and balks. Whether
any of it is true or not is irrelevant. John Q. Public doesn't shop cars
with a Turbo-chipping application guide in his back pocket and a passion for
tinkering. I think the VR6 will win out in sales volume for this reason
alone. I could be wrong...
