4KQ Coil-overs

From: Whitson <whitson2@gte.net>

Third, coil over suspensions, are they worth
it ? What is necessary to make them for the 4kq
if all the parts are readily available ? Found
a source for the supplies (hopefully in the
correct dia.) in the Northeast US. Any BTDT ?

Why would you want to convert to coil-overs ? You can get springs
for the 4KQ in several different rates and several lengths. I think that
Spaks has a good variety to choose from.

If you do want to convert to coil-overs, there are 2 options available that
I know of. You can get the Jamex set-up which requires no cutting or
welding. They supply a new lower spring perch which rides on a alum
collar which in turn rests on the original sprint perch.

OR you can get the type of coil-overs where you have to cut the original
lower spring perch off, grind the area flat and weld a round collar on to
the strut
The alum. collar now sits on this welded collar.

I have used both systems on my 4KQ rally car. The rear uses a Jamex system
with
variable rates springs (260lbs-320lbs). The front uses the other systems
(from 2Bennett)
and rides on 325lb springs.

Which is the best ? in my view its the 2Bennet system - they use standard
2.5" springs
which I can get anywhere in any rate and in any length.

Is it worth it for a street car ? probable not. I used it on my rally car
where I need to change
the ride height and spring rate several times a year.
