I need to post a correction on the condition of the old pilot bearing.
There was evidently a misunderstanding, and it turns out the mechanic did
_not_ find that pilot bearing was cracked, or defective in any obvious way.
But it did have 105K on it, so under the circumstances I don't regret
spending a few bucks ($31+shipping) for the replacement. No doubt about the
leaking input shaft seal, however.
