quattro in the boonies
i took the mountain bike up the forest tracks behind the beach yesterday.
great forest trails, but the track got more and more washed out and the
hills more difficult. on a couple of them i was only a couple of gears away
from my granny gear. very hot work, but worth it for the stunning views of
the coast, and the bush and the little beach (horseshoe bay) which was the
destination about an hour away.
when i got to the top i come across a house/hut (in nz, we call it a bach)
with amazing 360 views, and a landrover series 3 parked in the "drive".
dropped in (as you do around these parts), partly to say hello, partly to
see if it was ok to continue over what was obviously now private land. the
bloke i bumped into turned out to be a recently retired cop who had 120
hectares of bush which he was foresting. turned out that he knew some
people that i did (this is nz you know!), and i ended up having a smoko with
him.
anyway we got talking about landrovers, 4x4's (not suvs) and cars in
general. almost in passing he mentions that the only other vehicle which he
knows that has made the journey up the forest track i had just traversed was
his son in law's car.
in a 1984 80q. he wasn't bullsh*tting either.
