5ktq afraid to rev- Resolved!

Some of you may remember my post from a few months ago, when I described a problem my car
had since I bought it last June- no power above ~4500 RPM. This past Sunday night, as I
was preparing it for a trip to Detroit, I had an urge to check the cam timing. I found
the mark to be well below the cam cover gasket line, meaning the cam was advanced by a
tooth. I looked at the Bentley, decided it was worth the risk of it not running in time
for my trip, and set the cam sprocket back by a tooth. After correcting the distributor,
I took it for a spin. I cannot describe the improvement in this car. It now runs as well
as my brother's 5ktq, similarly chipped. The miss at idle is gone, it is smoother through
all rev ranges, I saw a 3mpg improvement on my trip, and most important, it makes mucho
power everywhere (above 3000 rpm). I would like to thank Orin, Jorgen, Ned, and others
who took time to help me figure this problem out. I hope my experience will help someone
else someday.
Now, how did this happen in the first place? The salesman said the timing belt had
recently been done by the local dealer (Star Motors, Clarksburg, WV). The fool who did it
must have screwed up setting the timing (it's so obvious, though). When the PO got the
car back, he must have noticed that it drove like a bad diesel. I'll bet he took it back
to the dealer, who told him he needed a new engine for $14,000. He traded it. Dealer
wins.
