   One Lap of America with some friends and my dad told me straight out that he
   objected to me doing this ...BIG TIME.  And, my dad is a speed freak and racing
   fanatic himself.  He told me that those guys get next to no sleep and have to
   drive rediculous triple-digit speeds on public roads to get to where they need
   to be in that amount of time.  I think he had read a lot about those who do it

I think you're confusing the One Lap with the [near apocryphal]
Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Dash. The One Lap is,
or at least is billed as, a completely street-legal sane rational
road trip. All public-road legs are at legal limits; the various
track/etc. events are of course another matter...it is a *long*
road trip, and you are driving a *lot*...but it is a safe and
reasonable road trip. Or so they say.
