I've got a '93 90CS and upgraded the wheels/tires a couple of years ago.
The most limiting factor is the 4x108mm bolt pattern, which is some what
uncommon.
You can readily go up to a 7.5" wide wheel without any problems; you
probably won't find wheels with the stock 37mm offset, but 35mm and 34mm
are common and work fine (these move the wheel 2-3mm outward).
As for tire sizes, a 205 is most likely the widest you'll be able to go
without problems. As others have pointed out, you may be able to go
to a 215, though I don't think Tire Rack or Discount "approves" this
fitment.
So, I ended up with 16x7.5" wheels with 205/55 16 tires; not a bad
combination. That tire size is common (and relatively cheap) and the 7.5"
wheels stretch them out to give a maximal contact patch. I don't
know if you're considering going to 17" wheels or not... It's possible,
but the choices are severely restricted; you may also find it hard to
get narrow (205 or 215) 17" tires, not to mention the $$$.
I've got TSW Imola wheels; I believe all TSW wheels will fit, as will
several Borbet styles.
