Re: 200tq alternator

Ah my favorite... Electrical problems on quattros and alternator failures.
Many btdt. First off, spend the 25 bux to keep your alternator cool, it sits
right under a very hot air pump. Secondly, the hose that comes off the oil
cooler ducting, is supposed to cool the right side motor mount that also sits
under that very same hot air pump. If your car has some miles on it (like
over 100k) you can bet that the right side motor mount is prolly already shot.
To ck it, remove the 2 bolts on the bottom of the mount (15mm socket), and try
twisting the mount (assuming it doesn't fall off in your hand). It it moves
freely or just falls off, replace it, it can be done with only removing the
turbo heat shield and air box. This is the biggest reason for #1 exhaust
manifold leakage (and sloppy shifting too), if the engine can rock too much it
stresses the exhaust components. While you are there, you also want to
replace the right side trans wing mount, it's hiding behind a heat shield just
behind the rr front subframe mount.

The standard ck of alternator/charging systems should include the afterun
system, Radiator fan and resistor pack system, the common high resistance in
the alt to batt wire, and clean solid grounds thruought the chassis. Bottom
line, the alternators in the quattros, especially the 200tq's are barely up to
the tasks demanded of them.
