In California, fines are doubled on bridges (and construction zones). This
is at least partially in response to several recent fatalities on the Golden
Gate bridge. And nothing sucks quite like sitting in traffic for an hour
because there was a wreck on the bridge. Further, the speed limits on bridges
are reduced to 55, compared to 65 (Mph) on most freeways.
That said, I speed there too, at least when the road is clear. My mantra
is to be the 2nd fastest car at all times. (Matts speeding tip #27)
Tailgating, and lane changes into an occupied space are what cause the most
wrecks. I think most CHP officers understand this, I've had several close
calls and the CHPer went for the guy tailgating and weaving in and out,
rather than pick on me for being 10mph over.
Now the local small-town sheriff is another story. The San Jose city police
are busy fighting big city stuff with guns and swat teams. But I drive through
an unincorporated area near my home, and the county sheriff is often staking
out a 4-way stop and a 30mph zone. Know thy competition (Matts speeding tip
#12).
