If the fuel supply system is anything like the VW setup, you might have
a lifter pump in the tank as well as an external pump.  If this isn't
working it puts extra strain on the main pump, increasing the buzzing.
Also, there will be a filter on the lifter (with or without pump) in the
tank.  If it is clogged-up you'll have the same problems.  Either way,
the end result is usually a screwed pump if left too long.

It might also be worth trying a direct supply from the battery to the
pump just to see if it sounds any healthier.  If that makes any
difference it's probably burnt/bad contacts in the pump relay or the
wiring to the pump itself.
