I'll be happy to tell you. All VW A2s (85-92) have the two pump system
(See, Bentley's Manual, "Volkswagen GTI, Golf, Jetta Service Manual
Gasoline, Diesel, and Turbo Diesel Including 16V 1985-1992," CHapter 5
(Fuel System--Gasoline), Pp 17-22). The in tank pump is accessed by a
plate in the boot. It is held in in the same place as the fuel tank level
sender. I have personally had to replace both pumps on my 86 GTI, so I
know for a fact they are tehre. The in tank pump is known as a "transfer
pump" and runs about $70 american. It is the one that usually fails
first. If you ignore it, like I did (hey, I didn't know it was in there
either), it burns out the main pump--for $250 american. But they are both
there.
