RE: Should I buy a 87 5000 cs turbo

Frank,

I have an example of the same year and model you're looking at. I love the car, but the frequent warnings you hear about the auto tranny are to be headed. Without any warning mine now has a tranny in need of a rebuild. And none of the transmission shops in my area will even touch it! I'm now faced with a $1000+ bill or a car worth <$500 for parts value. That said, it is a very good car that has served me well for 149k miles, and still looks new. The only problems I've had were the usual maintenance things: brakes, exhaust(original lasted 140k miles), timing belts, etc. If you're serious about this one, be sure to check to see if the tranny and differential fluids are mixing at all- a sign of bad things to come.

Go ahead and buy yours and I'll sell you mine for a parts car ;)

Subject:	Should I buy a 87 5000 cs turbo

Hi;

I am a newbe.  I have a chance to buy a 87 5000CS turbo Auto sedan.

I know how it handles (and I like it) My question is how reliable is it?
Is this a good year, model, transmission, turbo ETC. My point of reference
for how reliable a car should be is a string of Golfs and Rabbits and 4
Peugeots. OK go easy on the Peugeots, either you love them or you hate
them. (the Peugeots were less trouble then the Golfs)
