90q voltage requlator removal?

While we are on the subject of alternators and voltage regulators, I have a
question about the voltage regulator in my 1988 90q.  I was planning to
examine it and see if I needed to replace it or its brushes as preventative
maintenence.  However, it looks like I would need a right-angle, Phillips
no. 3, ratchet screwdriver to remove it if the alternator is in situ.  Has
anyone on the list removed the voltage regulator while the alternator is in
the car?  If so, how?  Remove the radiators?  Otherwise, I suppose I have to
remove the bumper to remove the alternator.
