Quattro transmission: differential reversible?

I am working on an interesting project, hoping to use a
late 80's quattro drivetrain in an opposite manner,
i.e. transmission in back, rear diff in front. I
haven't one to disect just yet, but am wondering of the
possibility of reversing the diff (ring gear) to turn
the axles the opposite way. If so, are there years or
models to avoid, and which would be best to use with
the 5-cyl. turbodiesel? I would be shoeing the beast
with 28" tall tires (225/75/15's). Also, is there
sufficient room on the trans. case to add a diff. lock?
