3speed v 4 speed (was dropping a 4 speed in a 3 speed car??(tranny question))

I have been getting replies that the 3 speed is BETTER than the 4 speed?  I
thought the added gear would help put less stress on the car.  I am thinking
that with the added gear, I can do alot better acceleration and have better
high end speeds.  But if that means "downgrading" on the relibility on my car,
then rebuilt tranny here I come.  Anyone know how to prevent this from
happening again?  This is the 2nd tranny I had to replace.  I know the car
manual says that I have to "Service it" every 20,000.  Is that nessiary?  If
so, can I "SERVICE" it myself.  The dealership is a bit on the steap side when
it comes to a 11 year old car.
