The aluminium oil pan on the '91 200q seems to work just fine; not aware of
any problems/impacts/shattering. Benefits seem to be lower weight, good heat
transfer. The '91 200q20v is pretty low to start, and many listers have
lowered it further; although the oil pan is not the lowest point on the car
(isn't the S4/S6 pan even lower due to increased oil capacity?). Is the 1.8t
engine located further forward from the front wheels, or have they dropped the
pan down low for more oil capacity? Not sure why it's so vulnerable from the
various posts. Perhaps this is an opportunity for the aftermarket: skid
plates on either side run off the frame. Sounds cheaper than worrying/fixing
the pan/risking the engine.
