Cracked Cat
Patient: 1987 VW Quantum Syncro
Problem: Cracked catalytic converter
Diagnosis: Replace (or mend?) Cat, preferably with a high-performance unit
There it is... in a nutshell. My QSW's cat has a slight crack in it... enough so
that it is noticeable (at least from inside the car). I asked the guy at Speedy
Muffler (I went there only to confirm where the leak was coming from) if we
could just weld it, and he said they are not supposed to, since doing so could
melt the "stuff" inside. I didn't push the issue...
Rather than buy one from him at the cost of $200, I'd rather find one elsewhere,
preferably a high performance version. So...
Has anyone BTDT with replacing their cat with a high-po version? If so, where
did you get it? How much?
There is one in the J.C. Whitney catalog for $90. Anyone know if it will fit,
and if it is any good? They list it as being 16" long, in the usual variety of
ID (2", 2.25", 2.5", 3"). Anyone know what size the OE exhaust is on the QSW (or
the 4kq, for the matter)? Is it 2.25"?
Do places that sell VW or Audi parts (i.e. TAP, IA, Neuspeed, etc.) sell high-po
cats?
If I have to (or should) order an OEM one, where is the best place to get it?
Linda @ Carlsen?
Thanks. All BTDT and feedback is greatly appreciated (even if you don't have a
QSW).
