Drivers window only goes down

Morning all,
I got an 84 Audi 5000 turbo.  Yesterday the drivers window would go down
but not go up. (All the other windows work fine)  For a quick fix & a
little trouble shooting I pulled the door panel and applied power
directly to the window regulator and the window went back up with no
problem.  At the same time I checked if there is power to the regulator
when pressing the window switch. In the down mode it does but not in the
up mode.  Meanwhile I disconnected the connector to the window regulator
so I don't accidentally lower the window and freeze.
Before I spend a lot of time with the Bentley book and wiring diagrams,
has your experience indicated that I need to replace the window switch
assembly?
