Clutch pedal travel

Fellow Listers-
Looked at an 89 80q today, for the wife. The car is in great shape, PO was
friend of a friend, blah blah blah. Only one thing has me concerned. There
seems to be an exceptional amount of pedal travel before the clutch engages.
Pedal has to be almost to the top of its travel. Of course the used car
dealer that currently owns the car says, "It probably just needs to be
adjusted. It seemed fine when I drove it." Can the clutch be adjusted?
Or, is this guy full of it?
The car has 185K miles on the clock, but the red paint is in great shape.
Same goes for the gray cloth interior and everything else, for that matter.
The clutch thing just has me worried. I can own this car for $3900. Is
this a reasonable price? Should I be expecting to put a clutch in it?

TIA for what is, I'm sure, going to be very helpful info/advice!
