I've always believed that the engines was like this:

S2		Audi 80 sedan with 230 hp 20V I5 turbo
S2 Avant	Audi 80 wagon with 230 hp 20V I5 turbo
S2 Coupe	Audi Coupe with 230 hp 20V I5 turbo
S4		Audi 100 with 230 hp I5 turbo
S4 Avant	Audi 100 wagon with 230 hp I5 turbo
RS2		Audi 80 wagon with 315 hp I5 turbo, built by Porsche

And when the 100 changed name to A6, the S4 changed to S6.
Because the 80 was "on the way out", Audi kept the "80" name, and the
S2/RS2 names.

Correct me if I'm wrong (very possible!)!
