Noisy final drive - '93 - 90CS

I'm starting to hear a howling noise from my '93 -90CS, non-Q, slush box
auto, 72K miles.  It only makes noise when accelerating or under a
slight load, quiet when deaccelarating/coasting.  I've checked the fluid
level of the final drive and it's about 1/8" below the fill plug which I
assume is OK.  Has anyone else had final drive problems with these
models.  I know I should have not settled for an automatic, but it was
so pretty (Pearl/ecru) and such great shape (also, the price was
right!)...now it's probably time to pay my dues to you know who  :(
