Clunking 97 A4

Testing a 97 A4 for possible purchase and have come across an odd problem.

After being sufficiently warm there is a clunking in the rear while taking
off.  Once the RPMs are up to 3500 and above it disappears.  There isn't any
feedback while driving other than the sound and feeling it vibrate taking
off from a dead stop.  The problem is worse starting up an incline.  Has
anyone experienced this problem/solution?
