Interference Engines
When this subject comes up, I believe it is suggested the 2.2 liter NA
engine in my 87 Coupe GT should be a non interference engine. However, when
the water pump failed and the cam stopped turning, it bent the valves in a
couple of the cylinders. I repaired it myself so I actually saw the dings in
the top of the pistons and the bent valves.
This happened some time ago but I've remained curious about it and since
there are so many people on this list that are expert on these engines, I
thought I would inquire about what makes my Coupe special.
The U.S. emissions sticker says 136 in^3 (2.2286 liters). The engine code
from the sticker in the trunk says KX.
I've bought this car new so nothing has been done to it such as changing the
cam.
Anybody have any info on this?
