I bought the engine ... someone else sold it to me.  _They_ are doing
the ABY upgrade, because: "The MB isn't powerful enough."  So - a 102k
mile MB engine is displaced.

And, like I said, I found a dead WoT switch.  Also a completely shagged
cam oil seal, which had liberally soaked the front of the car and the
alternator in oil, one collapsed lifter (at least), a large crack in
the exhaust manifold that must have been audible a block away, and all
of the main breather hoses in a putty-like state.

According to his wrench, the engine has a 'small end rattle'.  I can't
immediately find any play, but I'll pull a piston or two this evening
and have a look.  I suspect it's lifters and exhaust.

You have never seen such a messy engine, though.  A good thing, really -
lots of protective oil everywhere.  I wonder how many objects like
this are languishing neglected under ur-quattro bonnets.
