So, as you've reasoned, it's not at all "pointless".

As we all know too well, high state of consciousness is not required for
operating an automobile. The enthusiasm of much of the public for DRL
installation is testimony to that fact.

BTW, which Audis have that (light-level detection) feature? It's something
I once suggested as an alternative to mandatory DRLs, but others have
asserted to be unworkable.
