Rod knock, part III

Yesterday, I took a day off work and replaced the rod bearings in my '89 200q
... as it turns out, it was bearing No. 3 that was worn down to the brass. I
noticed some sludge/coke in the oil hole in the crank and surmise that it
must have been starved for oil hence the increased wear ... the other
bearings all looked surprisingly good for 143k miles. I cleaned it out with
some brake cleaner and a small gun-cleaning brush and blew out the crank with
some air ... I didn't bother pursuing it any further and hope that I cured
the problem. I am a little nervous about reusing the rod bolts but since I
couldn't see any way of replacing them without pulling the head and others
told me they've done this without any problems, I figured I would give it a
shot. We'll see...

I also replaced the timing belt (again) and oil pump while I was in there ...
man, are those things ever costly!
