This is not always the case now, at least with GM parts. As part of my
business I purchase OEM GM parts on a regular basis from a local dealer
(gives between 10-30% off depending on part) and many parts have gotten
relatively cheap. I picked up a compressor for a friends 5KS, brand NEW,
in the OEM box with Orings/gasket included for $235.00. This may have
been a "special", but GM is trying to get customers back to the dealers
parts counter with competitive pricing. I just bought a Fuelish Injector
Pump for the GMC Diesel, cost, new OEM is $920, the local rebuilder gets
$1250+$150 core.
Audi recently ran a few ads in the automotive repair trade magazines
similar to the Mercyless Benz ads about how they are reducing parts
prices in order to "win back your parts business". On the Mercyless Benz
parts the savings are visible, $2500 cheaper for a 300D engine today than
a year ago. I'm still waiting to come across anything similar when I
inquire about Audi parts.
